Game recap from the TinCaps:
TinCaps Come Back in Ninth for Walk-off, Sweep
Fort Wayne Plates Three With Two Outs in Ninth
(June 3, 2016) – The TinCaps scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to storm from behind and beat the South Bend Cubs, 4-3, on Thursday night at Parkview Field and sweep the three-game series. A crowd of 7,112 — including a couple of Indianapolis Colts — saw the excitement, making it the sixth sellout of the season.
Fort Wayne (29-25) trailed 3-1 entering the last of the ninth as South Bend (31-21) turned to James Norwood (L, 2-1) for the save. After he began the inning with a strikeout, Norwood allowed a hard-hit single to TinCaps center fielder Michael Gettys. Catcher Austin Allen nearly grounded into a game-ending double play to second base, but beat it out at first. That brought up right fielder Jhonatan Peña, who doubled past the third-base bag, advancing Allen to third. On a 2-2 pitch, first baseman Brad Zunica singled to right field to score Allen and Peña to tie the game.
With Carlos Belen pinch-running for Zunica, designated hitter Kyle Overstreet hit a grounder to Cubs third baseman Jesse Hodges that he threw wildly across to first, enabling Belen to score the winning run.
The TinCaps now have two walk-off victories this season and have won five games when trailing at the end of eight innings. Fort Wayne has 13 come-from-behind wins overall, counting each of the past three days against South Bend.
Before the rally, Cubs right fielder Eddy Martinez broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run double to left-center field that brought in a pair. Earlier, Martinez gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to left. The TinCaps tied the game, 1-1, in the third as second baseman Peter Van Gansen provided a two-out RBI single to left field, scoring Overstreet, who had doubled.
Gerardo Reyes (W, 3-1) pitched a perfect ninth inning on the heels of starter Logan Allen (4.1 IP, 4 SO) and reliever Blake Rogers (3.2 IP, 2 SO).
Colts starting defensive tackle David Parry and safety Clatyon Geathers signed autographs for fans before the game and threw out ceremonial first pitches. Blue the Mascot, Colts cheerleaders, and more were on hand.
