TinCaps Win Third Straight Over Lugnuts

(August 6, 2013) – For the first time in the second half of the season, the TinCaps have won three games in a row. Fort Wayne defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Parkview Field to establish their longest winning streak in two months.

Left-handed starter Max Fried (5-5) continued the TinCaps’ recent run of impressive pitching with six shutout innings. It was the third straight start in which Fried lasted six innings and the first time the 19-year-old has accomplished that in his young career. Fried scattered five hits and two walks, while inducing eight groundball outs. His performance follows seven shutout innings by Zach Eflin on Monday and Joe Ross and Walker Weickel who yielded three combined runs in Sunday’s doubleheader.

After Lansing (17-28, 49-65) starter Kendall Graveman (0-1) twirled four scoreless innings, Fort Wayne (17-27, 60-53) finally provided Fried with some run support in the bottom of the fifth. The TinCaps loaded the bases with a Luis Domoromo walk, a Luis Tejada single, and an error on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Stubblefield that allowed him to reach first. Rodney Daal then gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Mallex Smith provided the TinCaps with a second run on a run-scoring single of his own.

While Lansing cut Fort Wayne’s lead to 2-1 in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Dwight Smith Jr., that’s as close as the visitors would get. The TinCaps tacked on an insurance run in the eighth via an RBI double off the bat of Alberth Martinez. Matt Chabot and Trevor Gott each received credit for a hold with one inning of relief and Roman Madrid earned his 18th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

The TinCaps completed their season series against the Lugnuts with a 13-3 record.

Fort Wayne heads to South Bend on Wednesday to begin a three-game series against its in-state rival. Matthew Shepherd (4-5, 3.76) is set to receive the ball for the TinCaps against the Silver Hawks’ Jesse Darrah (9-7, 4.21). The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
