The Downtown Improvement District and Business on Broadway team up to clean up Downtown

(May 19, 2010)—The Fort Wayne Downtown Improvement District (DID) and Business on Broadway teamed up Saturday to clean up downtown for the Great Gateway Green-Up, an event in conjunction with the Great American Clean Up.

The event stretched from Clinton Street to Fairfield Avenue along Baker Street and from Main to Creighton along Broadway. Over 350 volunteers collected 12,020 gallons of trash, brush and debris from the downtown landscape. This number compares closely to the 14,500 gallons of material that the DID picked up throughout the entire year in 2009.

“We were very pleased with the turnout of the event,” event coordinator Nick Arnett said. “Everyone seemed to have a good time. We were able to clear away thousands of gallons of debris and we brought attention to the need for upkeep of downtown gateways. I would call that a success.”

The Downtown Improvement District’s Clean & Green program began in the summer of 2007 with the purpose of creating a clean and safe downtown by removing weeds, litter, and other items from downtown sidewalks.

The program has grown to include year-round maintenance and upkeep of the downtown landscape. The Clean & Green team works hard to keep downtown sidewalks clean and free of any hazards to pedestrians.
