The Allen County Highway Department is offering bags and sand on a self-serve basis for Allen County residents affected by flooding or concerned about rising water near their property.

Allen County Highway Department Offering Sand & Sandbags to Residents Affected by Flooding
Allen County, Indiana (April 4, 2025) – The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for several parts of Allen County. For county residents affected by flooding or concerned about rising water near their property, the Allen County Highway Department is offering bags and sand on a self-serve basis.
The fill-them-yourself bags and sand will be available both Saturday and Sunday at the Highway Department’s two maintenance facilities:
- North facility is located at 2234 Carroll Road – Enter through the south gate. Shovels are available on site.
- South facility is located at 8317 East Tillman Road. Bring your own shovel.
Both locations will leave their gates unlocked over the weekend. The sand and bags are near the gates and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The American Red Cross offers these flood safety tips:
- Listen to area radio and television stations and NOAA Weather Radio for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress or other critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS)
- When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet.
- Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
Remember: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” if you come upon a flooded street.
