News release from the Fort Wayne Fire Department:

Apartment Fire, Lawton Place

(March 5, 2017) – At 11:29 p.m., an occupant called 911 to report a fire in another apartment in his building in the 500 block of Lawton Place. He was able to safely evacuate. One minute later, neighbors in the apartment went next door and called 911, reporting the fire.

Those same neighbors forced entry into the rear apartment and dragged the lone occupant outside and attempted CPR to revive him. When FWFD units arrived on scene two minutes later, they commenced fire attack and took over care of the victim. The fire was under control at 11:37 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was assisted by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, Neighborhood Code Enforcement, NIPSCO, Indiana Michigan Power, and the Allen County Coroner’s office.
