Game recap from the TinCaps:
TinCaps Throw Gem, Blank Whitecaps, 1-0
Nix, De Los Santos Allow Two Hits in Road Win
By: David Kenyon
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (May 13, 2016) – The only thing steadier than the rain during the TinCaps’ 4-0 victory Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark was Fort Wayne’s pitching.
Jacob Nix retired all 12 West Michigan Whitecaps he faced, and Enyel De Los Santos (W, 2-1) surrendered just two hits throughout five scoreless frames. They combined for nine strikeouts to help Fort Wayne (19-16) snap a three-game losing streak.
Nix threw a mere 41 pitches (29 strikes), while De Los Santos tossed 51 (35 strikes). Neither 20-year-old walked a batter, while the defense behind them was flawless.
In the fourth inning, Carlos Belen ripped a double and advanced to third on a Michael Gettys infield single. Belen put the TinCaps on the board thanks to a Beau Burrows (L, 1-3) wild pitch. Burrows, the Detroit Tigers’ first pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, took the loss after giving up one run in five innings.
The TinCaps scored a pair of runs with just one hit in the seventh. After Kodie Tidwell singled and Jhonatan Pena walked, Mason Smith dropped down a bunt that was thrown wildly to first base. Tidwell scored from second on the play. Pena later scored on a groundout.
In the ninth, Mason Smith and Peter Van Gansen hit back-to-back doubles to make it 4-0.
Fort Wayne smacked nine hits, highlighted by a 3-for-4 night from Michael Gettys.
