Belen Homer Powers TinCaps Past Kane County
Fort Wayne Overcomes Ninth-Inning Deficit

GENEVA, Ill. (May 7, 2016) – The TinCaps scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to come-from-behind and beat the Kane County Cougars, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Fort Wayne (17-13) trailed 3-2 in the ninth when Carlos Belen smashed a three-run home run deep beyond the left-field fence. The 20-year-old third baseman drove in second baseman Peter Van Gansen and first baseman Ty France, who had both singled. The TinCaps didn’t stop there, though. Center fielder Michael Gettys and designated hitter Kodie Tidwell followed with back-to-back singles before Keegan Long (L, 0-1) — who started the inning and didn’t record an out — was pulled. Two batters later, catcher Kyle Overstreet added a two-run single for insurance to make it 7-3.

Kane County (16-13) initially led 1-0 with a run in the second and 2-0 after another in the fourth.

The TinCaps tied the game with a pair in the fifth. Right fielder Mason Smith doubled to plate Gettys. Smith later scored when Cougars shortstop Galli Cribbs had a wild throw to first base on a grounder by left fielder Rod Boykin.

The Cougars climbed in front, 3-2, in the seventh, as second baseman Joe Munoz smacked a double off the left-field fence. In the ninth, Kane County could only claw back with a single run.

Left-hander Jerry Keel (W, 1-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief, while righty Nick Monroe worked the ninth. Before that, starter Jacob Nix went the first two innings with two strikeouts followed by five innings from Enyel De Los Santos (five strikeouts).

Fort Wayne finished its six-game road trip at 4-2 and has won four consecutive series.

The TinCaps have Sunday off for Mother’s Day.
