TinCaps sweep Dayton Dragons
(July 30, 2015) – The TinCaps jumped out to an early five-run lead on Thursday night and never looked back, defeating Dayton, 8-4. The win completed a three-game sweep of the Dragons, the fifth time the TinCaps have swept an opponent this season.
A crowd of 8,727 fans made it out to Parkview Field, the fifth-largest in stadium history. It was also the 14th sellout of the season.
There was an offensive surge the last three nights as Fort Wayne racked up 39 total hits.
Fort Wayne scored 11 runs in the final two innings of Wednesday’s game, and then opened up Thursday’s contest with five in the first three innings. Michael Gettys scored on a wild pitch from Junior Morillo (L, 3-6), and then Franmil Reyes plated Luis Urias on a fly ball to right field.
Trae Santos homered in in the second inning – his second straight night with a dinger – to increase the home team’s lead to 3-0. The first baseman now has a team-leading nine long balls.
In the third, Reyes drove in another run, and after Ruddy Giron touched home after an error at second base, the lead was 5-0.
Dayton tried crawling back with runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but it wasn’t enough. Giron socked a two-run single down the right-field line to extend Fort Wayne’s lead to 8-4. The shortstop went 9-for-14 (.642) in the series against the Dragons with five runs scored.
Travis Radke (W, 1-0) was wonderful in his second start as a TinCap. The lefty went six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run. Yimmi Brasoban then earned his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
The first and second place teams in the Eastern Division meet on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when the West Michigan Whitecaps come to town. Fort Wayne sends left-hander Thomas Dorminy (8-7, 3.53) to the hill to face Whitecaps righty A.J. Ladwig (8-8, 4.01).
