Game recap from the TinCaps:
TinCaps ReCap: TinCaps Beat South Bend Cubs, 3-1
(July 8, 2015) – The TinCaps continued their recent run of sensational pitching with a 3-1 win over the South Bend Cubs at Parkview Field on Wednesday night. Fort Wayne is 13-8 over its last 18 games.
Starting pitcher Ernesto Montas (W, 8-5) matched a career high with six strikeouts over six innings, while holding South Bend to one run. Kyle McGrath relieved Montas with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Yimmi Brasoban (S, 3) closed it out in the ninth.
Fort Wayne (9-5, 41-41) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when center fielder Michael Gettys hit the first pitch thrown by Erick Leal (L, 6-6) over the left-field fence for his fifth home run of the season. The 19-year-old Gettys is now on a season-best eight-game hitting streak. He’s 14-for-34 (.412) during the stretch with six extra-base hits.
Left fielder Edwin Moreno powered the TinCaps to a 2-0 lead in the second with his second long ball of the year. Moreno went 3-for-3 on Wednesday, finishing just a double shy of the cycle. He tripled to start the fifth and scored on a Mitch Morales RBI groundout. It was the third baseman’s first RBI in a Fort Wayne uniform.
South Bend (7-7, 36-45) scored in the top of the sixth inning on an inside-the-park home run by Jason Vosler.
During this 21-game stretch of success for the TinCaps, the team’s ERA is 1.94. McGrath hasn’t allowed a run out of the bullpen since June 4, while Brasoban has been flawless out of the pen since May 19.
The TinCaps and Cubs conclude their four-game, home-and-home series at Parkview Field on Thursday night at 7:05.
