Fort Wayne falters in road trip finale

LANSING, Mich. (May 25, 2015) – When their first five batters of the game reached base and three scored, Memorial Day afternoon looked promising for the TinCaps. But soon after, the clouds rolled in, rain came down, and Fort Wayne lost to the Lansing Lugnuts, 11-5, at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The TinCaps got off to a torrid start in the first inning with four consecutive hits, including RBI singles from center fielder Michael Gettys and third baseman Duanel Jones, But their 3-0 lead didn’t last long.

Lansing (26-19) scored four times in the bottom half of the first, and wouldn’t give up its advantage after that. The Lugs added two runs in the fifth inning and a bases-clearing double by Rowdy Tellez made it 9-3 after six.
Although Fort Wayne (15-27) put up a run in the eighth and another in the ninth, Richard Ureña’s two-run eighth-inning home run negated the comeback effort.

Shortstop Ruddy Giron had three hits for the TinCaps. The 18-year-old has hit safely in all eight games he has played and has multiple hits in six of them. Meanwhile, Jones ended up with two hits and two runs batted in and first baseman Trae Santos doubled and walked twice.

Sean Reid-Foley (W, 1-1) worked five innings for the win. T.J. Weir (L, 2-2) struck out a career-high six in 4 1/3 innings.

After going 5-6 on their 11-game road trip, the TinCaps return to Parkview Field on Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Great Lakes Loons. The first of two seven-inning games is set to start at 6:05 p.m. The Military Appreciation Day games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app, and watched on Comcast Network 81.
