Duanel Jones homers in Fort Wayne loss

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (April 18, 2015) – Duanel Jones hit a two-run home run to give the TinCaps an early 2-0 lead Saturday evening at West Michigan, but it wouldn’t be enough to help Fort Wayne in a 10-6 loss to the Whitecaps.

Jones’ home run against A.J. Ladwig (W, 1-1) accounted for the only runs the TinCaps scored in six innings off West Michigan’s starter. The first baseman’s blast was impressive, though, as it hit the manual scoreboard in left field and plated right fielder Nick Torres, who had doubled.

Fort Wayne (2-4) starter Walker Lockett (L, 0-1) began the day with three scoreless innings before allowing a run in the fourth and three more — all with two outs — in the fifth. The Whitecaps broke the game open with a five-run sixth. Lockett left after five-plus innings.

Of the 10 runs the TinCaps surrendered, only half were earned. Fort Wayne committed four errors in the game, while West Michigan didn’t commit any.

Down 10-2 in the eighth, left fielder Edwin Moreno ripped a two-run triple for the TinCaps to begin a comeback attempt. Then in the ninth, Miguel Del Castillo drove two more home with a double that cut Fort Wayne’s deficit to 10-6. Moreno was back up with the bases loaded and one out as the tying run, but grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Paul Voelker (S, 1) came in to face Moreno in the ninth and received credit for the save.

Jones also added a single to his homer, while Torres finished with two doubles. Torres is hitting .464 through seven games with five doubles.

West Michigan (5-5) hosts Fort Wayne again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. In a matchup of left-handers, Thomas Dorminy is slated to start for the TinCaps against Trent Szkutnik. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
