Game recap from the TinCaps:
TinCaps Sweep Doubleheader, Take Wild Card Lead
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (September 1, 2014) – It’s simple. If the TinCaps win Monday afternoon, they’re in the Midwest League Playoffs for a sixth consecutive season. That’s the reality after Fort Wayne swept a doubleheader from the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Sunday night with wins of 3-1 and 2-1 at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Fernando Perez drove in all three runs for the TinCaps in the opener of the twin bill with a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth inning. He upped his league-leading and Fort Wayne single-season franchise record RBI total to 95.
Starter Kyle Lloyd struck out eight and allowed only one run on two hits in four innings. Jason Jester (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings and received the win, while Ryan Butler struck out three in the seventh for his 10th save.
Lloyd now leads the league in strikeouts with 155 in 119 2/3 innings pitched.
In the second game, Nick Schulz and Henry Charles both plated runs with singles in the second. That came in support of starter Jeffery Enloe (6-6). He threw five shutout frames. After Nick Mutz recorded two outs, Eric Yardley worked a four-out save – his third this season. Bowling Green (30-40, 61-76) scored its lone run of game two in the bottom of the seventh.
So if Fort Wayne (32-37, 62-76) wins Monday, it clinches the Eastern Division second-half wild card. Even with a loss, the TinCaps could still back in to the postseason if both Dayton and Great Lakes also lose.
Fort Wayne finishes the 2014 regular season at Bowling Green on Monday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Ronald Herrera is set to start for the TinCaps against lefty Ben Griset. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
