News release from the TinCaps:
Loons Thrash TinCaps in Error-Filled Loss
(August 19, 2013) Midland, Mich. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps committed a franchise-high-tying seven errors Monday night in a 12-5 loss to the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond. The 12 runs surrendered by Fort Wayne tied the team’s season high for runs allowed in a single game.
Great Lakes (32-24, 59-67) pestered TinCaps starter Max Fried for three runs in the second inning, bringing nine batters to the plate. Catcher Jose Capellan, who finished the night with a Loons franchise-record-tying six runs batted in, clocked a two-run double to key the scoring in that frame.
Fort Wayne (21-35, 64-61) first baseman Diego Goris authored a response with a solo home run in the fourth inning, which preceded a three-run Fort Wayne fifth inning. Reynaldo Bruguera drew a bases loaded walk and Goris had a two-run single, which gave the TinCaps a 4-3 lead, which quickly disappeared in the bottom of the fifth.
Joe Church (1-3), who replaced Fried, was on the mound as five Loons crossed the plate in the fifth. The TinCaps had committed two errors up until that point and erred twice more in the field during the fifth inning. Church’s final line charged him with seven runs, but only one of them was earned because of the four errors that were charged to the team during his time on the hill.
Only twice before has a Fort Wayne team committed seven errors in a game. This is the first such occurrence in the team’s tenure as the TinCaps. The other two times the team committed seven errors were July 11, 2008 and July 30, 2000.
The only other run managed by Fort Wayne came on a Gabriel Quintana RBI single in the seventh inning. The Loons added two runs in both the seventh against Church and in the eighth against Chris Nunn. Great Lakes reliever Ralston Cash (3-3), who pitched three innings, earned the victory.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Colin Rea for Fort Wayne and Jonathan Martinez for Great Lakes. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
