Daal Drives Offense in 7-4 Win

(May 20, 2013) Eastlake, OH – The TinCaps salvaged a split in their four-game series against the Lake County Captains with a 7-4 win at Classic Park on a warm and muggy Monday night.

With a first-pitch temperature of 86 degrees, Fort Wayne (25-17) jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The TinCaps scored one in the first inning thanks to consecutive two-out singles by Maxx Tissenbaum, Gabriel Quintana, and Jeremy Baltz, who picked up his team-leading 30th RBI of the season. Catcher Rodney Daal then led off the second inning with a solo home run – his fourth of the season – to put Fort Wayne up 2-0. The advantage increased to 3-0 in the fourth after Alberth Martinez doubled to begin the frame and Daal plated him with a single.

Lake County (15-26) erased Fort Wayne’s lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth, tying the game, 3-3.

The TinCaps regained control in the seventh when Daal uncharacteristically bunted for a single and stole second base. The Netherlands native later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tissenbaum to make it, 4-3. Gabriel Quintana followed that with a bloop RBI-single to right that scored Mallex Smith, who was on base after an infield single.

The visitors added to their 5-3 lead with two more in the eighth. Luis Tejada started the frame with a single to left field and came around to score on a Martinez triple. Daal, who finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, doubled past third base.

TinCaps starter Joe Ross received a no-decision after going the first four-plus innings. Ross allowed seven hits and walked one, while surrendering three runs (one earned). Leonel Campos relieved Ross in the fifth, working one inning, and was followed by Chris Nunn (3-0), who tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh to earn the win. Roman Madrid worked the eighth and ninth, when he was touched for one run, to get credit for the save.

For the Captains, Jake Sisco (1-3) threw the first six and 1/3 innings, a season-best, and struck out a career-high seven batters. D.J. Brown pitched 1 2/3 innings, and Jack Wagoner chipped in one inning.

The TinCaps are off on Tuesday before returning to Parkview Field Wednesday for a four-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Fort Wayne and South Bend play Wednesday morning with an 11:05 first pitch. The game can be seen on XFINITY Channel 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
