FWCS Seeks Grant to Support Magnet Programs

(February 26, 2013) – Fort Wayne Community Schools is applying for a $12 million Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the District’s magnet programs.

The grant would be used to strengthen and expand the academic offerings in selected schools to improve student achievement, recruit and retain students and prepare students for college and careers. In particular, the funds could be used to add or enhance programs at Harrison Hill Elementary School, Towles Montessori Intermediate School, Kekionga Middle School and South Side and Wayne high schools.

“Magnet schools have been a part of Fort Wayne Community Schools’ fabric since 1979, and have contributed greatly to the success and strength of the District,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson said. “It is important that we maintain strong, vibrant schools on the city’s south side, and this grant can help us achieve that goal while offering families additional choices in excellent schools.”

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of School Trustees approved a resolution Monday supporting the grant. FWCS will be notified in the fall if it receives the competitive grant.
