USF making MLK celebration “A Day On, Not a Day Off”

(January 3, 2013) – The University of Saint Francis invites the community to engage in “A Day On, Not a Day Off,” a day of community service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 21. Other activities will also take place that week and beyond to recognize Dr. King’s legacy of peace and equality for all.

To begin the recognition of Dr. King, the USF community will join the local community for the city-wide service commemorating him on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 501 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne.

On Monday, the university will engage in a variety of activities. The USF community will partake of a continental breakfast at 10:30 a.m. in the Achatz Hall atrium before moving to the hall’s Gunderson Auditorium for an 11 a.m. call to service. At 7 p.m., the community is invited to a concert, “Heartland Sings in Community: Martin Luther King Jr.,” at 7 p.m. in the North Campus auditorium.

Service projects at the USF North Campus throughout the day will include making blankets for children who are sick and hospitalized as part of Project Linus; crocheting and knitting warm winter wear for those in need for the Warm Fuzzies Project; and making pet beds at the North Campus for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control.

The USF community will also pitch in at the following charities and organizations across the area that day: Love Community Center, 1331 E. Berry St., cleaning and organizing; Vincent Village, 2827 Holton Ave., cleaning and rehabilitation, family portraits by USF photography students; Children’s Hope Hospitality House, 7922 W. Jefferson St., cleaning, rehabilitation, organizing; St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, 1600 S. Calhoun St., sorting and organizing merchandise; Associated Churches, 602 E. Wayne St., working in the food bank and other projects; Charis House, 431 Fairmount Place, spa services for residents, Zumba class, crafts and games for children; Mustard Seed Furniture Bank, 3636 Illinois Road, organizing items in the warehouse; Boys and Girls Club, 2809 Fairfield Ave., activities with Boys and Girls Club members; Ave Maria House, 1101 S. Lafayette St., making and serving lunch at day shelter for homeless; Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, 301 W. Superior St., painting rooms; and ACRES Land Trust, 1802 Chapman Road, Huntertown, indoor and outdoor service opportunities.

 

On Wednesday from noon-1 p.m. in the Pope John Paul II Center, an interdisciplinary panel of USF professors will address the topic, “Why You Should Care About Martin Luther King Jr.” A historical presentation, “An Evening with Coretta Scott King,” will be sponsored by Just Peace in Brookside mansion at 7 p.m.

 

On Thursday, “A Celebration of African American Art and Literature” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Achatz Hall atrium.

 

On Thursday, Jan. 31, the USF Student Nurse Association will collaborate with the American Red Cross on a blood drive at the North Campus.

 

Re-Use, Re-Shoot, Remember—a Camera Donation Project, will be conducted by the USF student photography club, F8, through April 22. Those who wish may bring gently used digital cameras to collection boxes located at the University of Saint Francis at 2701 Spring St.; Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne on Coliseum Blvd.; Sunny Schick camera store at 407 W. Jefferson Blvd.; Stellhorn Photo at 10310 Coldwater Road; and Carroll High School on Carroll Road to give residents of Vincent House, which provides transitional housing for the homeless, an opportunity to capture their own memories.
