Taylor’s Dream Therapy Guides Available

(August 1, 2012) – Taylor’s Dream Boundless Playground at Kreager Park has more than just fun to offer children and their families. Starting today, parents, caregivers and therapists for children with disabilities can download therapy guides from www.fortwaynepark.org. With the use of these guides, children will receive targeted therapy while they are playing at Taylor’s Dream.

“One of the initial guiding principals of the playground was to provide education and opportunities to individuals who assist children with special needs,” said Al Moll, Director of Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation. “The availability of these therapy guides is one step in that important process.”

The guides were assembled in an easy-to-follow manner, with pictures of each piece of equipment and directions on how they could be used in treatment. (An example of one page is attached.) Parents, caregivers and therapists can use these guides, free of charge by downloading them from www.fortwaynepark.org. Click the Facilities tab at the top of the page/Boundless Playground/Boundless Playground Therapy Guide.

Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department and a task force for Playful City USA determined that these therapy guides would be the next step in making Fort Wayne a more accessible and playful city. The following educators and therapists focused on different aspects of development and ways to encourage play and interaction with others: Josh Hower from FWCS’s Anthis Career Center, Danielle Lyons from Easter Seals ARC, Karen Line from Turnstone and Kathy Morse from Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation. Students at Anthis and also from Indiana Tech also had input on the guides.

The guides will be submitted for publication in the Therapeutic Recreation Journal.
