USF kicking off fourth annual USF Feeds the Fort food drive

(September 9, 2011) – University of Saint Francis faculty, staff and students hope the community will join them in raising over 40,000 food items for USF Feeds the Fort—We’re Worth Our Weight in Food, a campus-wide food drive to restock the shelves of local food banks for the needy at holiday times. The drive will kick off on Monday, Sept. 19.

USF departments have set numbered goals to meet in raising food items to match their individual “weights.” Collection bins will be placed all across campus for the university and local communities to fill with donated non-perishable food items.

The donations will help fill a critical need for Community Harvest Food Bank, St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen and the Associated Churches of Fort Wayne as the campus and community work together to feed hungry people in need of support in these times of economic crisis.

Badly needed food items in non-glass containers include rice, beans, canned foods, boxed foods, macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles, canned meats, peanut butter, pasta, canned pasta sauce and powdered milk. Checks and cash donations can also be sent to Colleen Huddleson in the School of Creative Arts for distribution to the food bank. She can be reached at

Donation barrels will be placed on the main level and the offices of the School of Arts and Sciences, Busse School of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership and School of Professional Studies in the Pope John Paul II Center, at the North Campus, the east and west entrances and garage area of Trinity Hall, the Brookside main entrance, in Campus Ministry, the offices at Hutzell Athletic Center, at D’Arcy Stadium, the main foyer of the Rolland Center and Achatz Hall and the main foyer of the Doermer Center.

In addition to the tens of thousands of food items, over $5,000 were collected for the food banks and soup kitchens from last year’s drive. Checks should be made out to Community Harvest Food Bank, St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen or Associated Churches of Fort Wayne.
