“Two Voices: An Abortion Debate” Closes Women’s History Month
(March 28, 2011) – In honor of Women’s History Month, two attorneys with expertise in women’s reproductive health laws and policies will debate the issue of abortion at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Presented by IPFW Women’s Studies and the Center for Women and Returning Adults, “Two Voices: An Abortion Debate” with Mary Hallan-FioRito and Kathryn Kolbert, will take place Tuesday, April 5, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Neff Hall, Room 101. It is free and open to the public.
“Two Voices” will be a moderated debate, with each speaker offering opening remarks. The debate then will follow a respond and rebut format. As moderator, Andy Downs, assistant professor of political science and director of the Downs Center for Indiana Politics, will impose strict time limits. Some questions for the debate will be selected by the WOST Co-Curricular Activities Committee; others will come from the audience on the night of the event.
Hallan FioRito, a 20-year veteran of the pro-life movement, is the executive assistant to Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago.
She became interested in the abortion issue while studying at Loyola University of Chicago’s School of Law, and went on to become the
president of the law school’s pro-life club. In January 2001, Newsweek magazine named FioRito one of 15 “Women of the New Century,”
highlighting her efforts on behalf of the pro-life movement. In October 1999, she was recognized as one of “40 under 40” prominent Chicagoans by Crain’s Chicago Business magazine.Kolbert is an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania. As one of the nation’s leading experts in legal, legislative, and policy
issues concerning women’s reproductive health, she often serves as a commentator on women’s rights and health in the national media. She has been widely credited by commentators as having saved Roe v. Wade with her 1992 argument before the U.S. Supreme Court in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. She is the former president and CEO of People for the American Way, one of the nation’s preeminent organizations dedicated to the promotion and protection of progressive values.The debate is supported by the IPFW Office of Academic Affairs; Office of Student Affairs; College of Arts and Sciences’ University Community, Conversation (UC2) program; Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs; Center for Social Research; Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association; Women of the World; and the Departments of Anthropology, Chemistry, Communication, English and Linguistics, History, International Language and Culture Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.
