Commissioners oppose Aqua Indiana rate hike

Press release from the Allen County Board of Commissioners:

Commissioners Oppose Aqua Indiana Rate Hike
Letter outlining position sent to state regulators

(August 24, 2010) – The Allen County Board of Commissioners has gone on record opposing Aqua Indiana’s pending request for increases to its water and sewer rates.

The Board expressed its opposition in a letter sent today to the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor in Indianapolis.

The Commissioners said in the letter that the 16.6 percent increase for water service and 18.5 percent increase for sewer service for residents in the Aboite Township area were inappropriate and excessive. “We are especially concerned since the utility was granted 75 percent increases in water and sewer rates less than two years ago,” the Commissioners said.

In addition, the Commissioners said that the proposed increases would place an undue hardship on customers already struggling during these difficult economic times.

“It is our hope that once all of the evidence in this case is examined, state regulators will come down on the side of the consumer and reject Aqua Indiana’s bid for higher rates,” the Commissioners concluded.
