Parkview Cancer Center Launches New Education Programs

(May 3, 2010) – Parkview’s Comprehensive Cancer Center is offering a series of new educational programs on a variety of topics, many of which are cancer-related. All programs are free and open to the public and are held in the Wellness Center on the third floor of the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer, entrance 4 on the Parkview North campus.

Answers from a Cancer Expert – Thursdays from 1-3 p.m.
Receive easy-to-understand, practical answers to your cancer questions. The one-on-one, Q&A sessions are led by Nancy Ehmke, clinical nurse specialist in oncology, Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center. Ehmke has been a nurse at Parkview for 27 years. The service is aimed at helping patients and others feel comfortable asking questions in a casual setting.

Cancer 101
These are one-hour classes led by Nancy Ehmke, who presents information in straightforward language, and questions are always welcome.

Topics:

  • Living with cancer? – Class will be held from 11 a.m.-noon Tuesday, June 8 Patients and their families often experience anger, depression, guilt, hopelessness, helplessness, and other feelings. Participants will learn coping strategies.
  • What is cancer? – Class will be available later this year Learn what makes cancer cells different from normal cells. Discover how cancer is diagnosed and find out about the many types. A brief overview of treatments is provided.
  • How is cancer treated? – Class will be available later this year Learn about the various types of treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and the newest – biotherapy. Find out why some treatments are recommended and others are not. Discover ways to prevent or minimize side effects.
  • Chemotherapy and biotherapy? – Class will be available later this year Learn how chemotherapy and biotherapy work and why they may be recommended to treat cancer. Potential side effects and how to prevent and minimize them are discussed.

Other Parkview experts will also offer classes on nutrition, exercise, massage therapy, and other topics. The next class will be held from 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, May 20. The topic will be “Body Regeneration” with Linda Kerr from the Parkview Women’s Health Center.
