May Classes at the Botanical Conservatory

Create a Fairy Garden, Thursday, May 13, 6 – 7:30 pm
Invite a magical friend to your home or yard with a fairy garden you create yourself. Fairy gardens combine small plants, rocks, and tiny structures made from natural materials into a miniature landscape. Because these gardens are in a container, you can take them outside when the weather is nice then bring them back in to brighten up your home during the cold winter months. All materials are provided but you may bring your own decorative elements to personalize your fairy garden. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own gloves and clippers. Ages 12+. Registration deadline: May 7. Fee: $35, Conservatory Member Fee: $29.

Ficus Bonsai for Beginners, Saturday, May 22, 1 – 2:30 pm
Now you, too, can discover the secrets of the bonsai masters. In this workshop, participants will receive their own small ficus tree. Then, under the careful guidance of Darlene Kittle and Ed Hake from the Fort Wayne Bonsai Club, you will pot it, trim it, and begin forming it into a beautiful bonsai showpiece. Along the way, you will learn about the proper pots and soils to use, how to prune and wire your plant, and the techniques for giving it a long and healthy life. Participants will also be inspired by the many other examples on display at the Conservatory that day during the Bonsai Club’s annual Spring Show. Participants should bring their own pruners or scissors; all other supplies will be provided. Ages: 14+. Registration deadline: May 14. Fee: $22, Conservatory Member Fee: $18.

Hanging Basket Workshop, Saturday, May 29, 10 am – 12 pm
Add some extra color to your backyard, porch, or arbor this year. Lynda Heavrin will guide you step by step to fill and plant a moss-lined hanging basket for summer-long enjoyment. A mix of annuals suited to sunny or partially shady locations will provide a delightful bright spot to any home or garden. All supplies and materials are provided. Lynda is Manager of Landscape and Horticulture and operates the Lawton Park Greenhouse. She also keeps a garden of her own. Admission to our new and exciting Butterfly Showcase, “Butterflies and Fairies”, is included in the class fee. Ages 12+. Registration deadline: May 21. Fee: $26, Conservatory Member Fee: $23.
