Mayor Tom Henry Taking Meals to the Homebound as Part of National Meals on Wheels Campaign
St. Joseph Hospital has worked with Homebound Meals for 36 years
(Monday, March 22, 2010) – Homebound Meals Inc. is inviting Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry to participate in its national March for Meals campaign Wednesday, March 24. St. Joseph Hospital has supported Homebound Meals Inc. for 36 years by preparing food for homebound adults living in and near the heart of the city and by being a load site for the program.
St. Joe’s nutritional services department prepares fresh meals daily for the largest group of routes delivered in Fort Wayne. The downtown location is one of four sites that participate in Homebound Meals.
“We are excited that Mayor Henry is willing to participate in our program,” said Judy Gregg, executive director for Homebound Meals Inc. “Our hope is this national effort will raise awareness to help end senior hunger by 2020. We always need volunteers to assist us with deliveries and donations to keep our community’s homebound fed.”
Homebound Meals Inc., a member of the National Meals on Wheels Association, relies on 120 volunteers to deliver meals to 185 clients five days a week. Clients are asked to pay $4 per meal and subsidies are available for low income recipients.
“Serving the poor and disadvantaged has always been an integral part of the mission for St. Joe, so it’s a great alignment for us to support the valuable work of Homebound Meals,” said Sr. Carole Langhauser, vice president of Mission Integration, St. Joseph Hospital. “St. Joe has a strong commitment to ensuring good nutrition is made available to homebound residents because we know this is such a critical element of healthcare.”
Since 1971, Homebound Meals Inc. has strived to enhance the quality of health and life of homebound clients by the delivery of hot, nutritional meals and by the daily visits of its volunteer drivers.
