What’s happening in the parks August 14 – 20
Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St.: The Botanical Roots Outdoor Concert Series continues on Friday, August 14 with Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound. Paul Cebar began performing in coffeehouses on the local folk scene in the mid-1970s. While earlier incarnations of the band were more pop-oriented, more recently the band is heavily into African, Latin, Caribbean, reggae, zydeco, R&B and soul styles. Admission: $6/ages 13 and up, free for ages 12 and under. Conservatory members admitted FREE. Doors open at 7:30 pm with the opening act at 8:30 pm. Foellinger Theatre, Franke Park: The Theatre is celebrating hot summer nights with all your favorites, sponsored in part by Arts United and the Indiana Arts Commission:
- Saturday, August 15, 8 pm – Spike and the Bulldogs. The high-energy group which brings vintage 50’s and 60’s Rock ‘n Roll to the stage is welcomed back to the Theatre. They’ll play your favorite songs of this era. Fee: $5. Sponsored by The River.
- Tuesday, August 18, 8 pm – Fort Wayne Area Community Band. In a salute to the Big Apple, the band will take the audience on a musical tour of New York City. Fee: FREE.
- Thursday, August 20, 8:30 pm – Movie: The Great Debators. Marshall, Texas, described by James Farmer, Jr. as “the last city to surrender after the Civil War,” is home to Wiley College, where, in 1935-36, inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and his clandestine work as a union organizer, Professor Melvin Tolson coaches the debate team to a nearly-undefeated season that sees the first debate between U.S. students from white and Negro colleges and ends with an invitation to face Harvard University’s national champions. Fee: FREE. Sponsored in part by WMEE and the Black Expo.
McMillen Pool, Oxford and Hessen Cassel—The last day McMillen pool will be open for the season is Sunday, August 16 from 1:30 – 6 pm.
Franke Park, Sherman Blvd.: Register by August 20 for Games! Dogs! Play! (and People, too!) This dog and owner competition/event which takes place Saturday, August 29, 9am – 1pm will provide hours of fun for you and your pet. Rescue groups, boarders, grooming salons and more will be on-site for you and your dog’s perusing. Teams consist of 3 people and 3 dogs. Each dog/handler must successfully complete 10 out of 11 challenges which test the dog’s ability to sit, stay, lay down, come on command, catch, retrieve and jump over obstacles. The winning team will have the opportunity to select one of the attending rescue groups to receive a $200 donation and will award the gift in a ceremony that day. The team fee is $36.
