News release from Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation:
Great Tree Canopy Comeback: Volunteers and Donations Needed
Saturday, November 1st, 10 am
(October 8, 2014) — On Saturday, November 1st, Friends of the Parks of Allen County invites citizens to partner with area parks departments, businesses, neighborhoods, and community volunteers to purchase and plant new trees for our parks and public spaces during the Great Tree Canopy Comeback. At a time when our trees are being lost faster than they are being replanted, our community is now facing the 8th year of devastation from the Emerald Ash Borer. As a community, we must directly fund and re-plant our city trees.
Volunteers of all ages are critical to the success of the event and are encouraged to sign up and help restore the tree canopy. More than 250 trees will be planted in the following parks: McMillen Park & Golf Course, Rockhill Park, Kettler Park, Psi Ote Park, Reservoir Park, Foster Park South, Werling Park in New Haven and Payton County Park.
To volunteer, or to make a donation toward replacing trees, please call Charlotte A. Weybright at 260-348-2871 or email to cwey0409@frontier.com. You may also visit the link below to enter your name and select a site where you would like to help.

Volunteers are asked to register in advance and to bring a shovel (marked with name and telephone). Badges and t-shirts will be handed out to volunteers, while supply lasts.
BACKGROUND: Created in 2002, the Great Tree Canopy Comeback is our community tree planting day organized by volunteers with Friends of the Parks and area parks departments to combat this critical loss of trees. Over the past 13 years, more than 2,700 trees have been planted in our parks due to the Great Tree Canopy Comeback.
