IPFW’s “Big Event” promotes smiles and comfort to Parkview pediatric patients
(May 20, 2014) – As part of its annual “The Big Event,” Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) students, faculty and staff volunteers today donated more than 150 pillows to pediatric patients at Parkview Regional Medical Center. The pillows were crafted in an effort to provide a little comfort, warmth and maybe even promote some smiles on the faces of the young boys and girls who spend time in the hospital.
IPFW students, faculty and staff began participating in The Big Event three years ago with the sole purpose of giving back and saying thank you to the Fort Wayne community. Participants chose from a variety of volunteer related options on their day of giving back, March 29, 2014, and these pillows donated today are a direct result of the volunteers actions back in March.
“We know that giving back to the community and participating in volunteer work is important for our IPFW family members, especially considering the community has given us so much over the years,” said Vicky Carwein, chancellor, IPFW. “Our 900-plus volunteers helped more than 55 agencies on March 29, and each person walked away with a better understanding of what it really means to give back and how individuals can make a big difference when working as one community.”
“The hospital can be a scary place for children and finding ways to help comfort our pediatric patients is not always an exact science,” said Patti Brahe, senior vice president, Parkview Women’s and Children’s Hospital. “These types of donations give us another resource, another opportunity to better connect with our little ones in hopes of providing comfort which can go a long way as we work to provide the best care possible.”
