Production not affected by minor fire in Fort Wayne Metals facility
(May 19, 2014) — As reported by local news media, Fort Wayne Metals experienced a minor fire at its facility at 3618 Ferguson Road in the early morning of Sunday, May 18. Since then, company officials were able to determine that the damage caused by the fire was minor and will not affect Fort Wayne Metals’ production capabilities.
“The damage is contained to one tank and one vent hood,” states Jeremy Rohrs, Director of Operations at Fort Wayne Metals. “We have redundancies built into virtually every part of our production process, so we were able to switch production to another tank. Nobody was hurt, our building did not sustain any structural damage, and our material in inventory was not affected. We take safety seriously, and we have containment programs and notification processes in place. Thankfully, they worked well, so this ended up being a pretty minor incident.”
As the press reported, the fire department was able to extinguish the flames within a few seconds of arriving at the scene, and no harmful chemicals were released into the environment.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary results point at two failed sensors as the cause for the incident, causing the tank to overheat, partially melt and begin smoldering.
