Fort Wayne Claims Victory in 11 Innings in Series Opener
Fort Wayne, Indiana (September 1, 2026) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps struck early and came through massively in the 11th inning in Tuesday night’s 6-4 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (Athletics affiliate).
Fort Wayne (53-72, 26-33) scored four runs in the first two innings in their second extra-inning win at Jackson Field this season. Third baseman Kerrington Cross launched a three-run homer in the first inning over the left-field wall with two outs in the first inning. It’s the second round-tripper in as many series for Cross, and he has a hit in six of his last nine showings.
Catcher Robbie Lavey (No. 20 Padres prospect) played hero tonight for the ‘Caps with his go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the 11th inning. Lavey is coming off a four-RBI game on Sunday against Dayton, the first for him since his junior year at George Washington, when he did so on March 11, 2025, against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Right-hander Will Varmette collected his fourth win of the season, getting the final six outs in extra frames. Varmette did not allow a hit and tossed just 17 pitches in his team-leading 41st appearance of the campaign.
Lansing (54-70, 25-35) got a pair of home runs in the series opening loss. Catcher Bryan Arendt hit his second home run with the Lugnuts this season in the fifth inning. The solo blast was one of two runs to come across in the frame, the other being on an RBI infield single from Breyson Guedez (No. 9 Athletics prospect).
Designated hitter Jake Reinisch clubbed a solo home run of his own over the right-field wall to tie the game in the eighth inning. Reinisch came into play today with a 39-game on-base streak, slashing .302/.461/.512 in the span, and has now reached base safely in his last 40 showings. The Lansing bullpen tossed eight scoreless innings while allowing five hits before Fort Wayne grabbed the lead for good in the 11th.
