Free family event explores “The Science Behind the Flush”Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 16, 2026) — What happens after you flush a toilet, empty a bathtub or run the washing machine?
Families can follow the journey of wastewater and discover the science, technology and people behind an essential community service during the fourth annual WaterWorks FunFest on Saturday, July 25.
City Utilities will host the free, family-friendly event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Water Pollution Control Plant, 2601 Dwenger Ave.
With the theme “The Science Behind the Flush,” WaterWorks FunFest offers a rare opportunity to explore the treatment plant, meet the people who keep it operating around the clock and see how wastewater is cleaned before being safely returned to the environment. Visitors can also learn how the plant turns waste into renewable energy to help power its operations.
Visitors can:
- Explore hands-on science activities and experiments with Science Central, engineers, environmental specialists and river advocates
- Tour the treatment plant’s pumping facilities
- Step inside the laboratory where water is tested
- Climb aboard big trucks and see equipment used to operate and maintain the wastewater system
- Enjoy games, activities and prizes
- Purchase food from local food trucks
The Water Pollution Control Plant can treat up to 100 million gallons of wastewater a day. Through interactive activities and guided tours, visitors will learn how pumps, laboratories, microorganisms and advanced technology work together to clean wastewater, protect local rivers and generate renewable energy.
Admission and all activities are free. WaterWorks FunFest is sponsored by OmniSource and Fox Contractors. The Ziffles food truck will also be on hand, offering specially priced lunch options.
