On October 24, 2025, at 0445 hours, the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle collision in the area of Illinois Road and Sutton Avenue.

Details/Summary:
The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a report of a crash in the area of Illinois Rd & Sutton Ave on Friday, October 24, 2025, at approximately 4:45 am. Officers arrived onscene to locate a sedan with heavy front-end damage and a semi stopped near the crash. Fort Wayne Fire Department was able to extract the trapped driver from the sedan within approximately 19 minutes after arriving on-scene. The driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Doctors at the hospital downgraded the driver’s condition to life-threatening.
Initial information indicates the sedan and the semi were both traveling westbound on Illinois Rd. The sedan crashed into the rear of the semi’s trailer. It is currently unknown why the sedan crashed into the semi. The speed of the sedan may be a factor. The driver of the semi is cooperating with the investigation.
The above release was emailed at 0731 hours. Before this, at 0559 hours, the FWPD sent an email message:
The westbound lanes of Illinois Rd in the area of Sutton Ave are currently closed due a critical traffic crash. All westbound traffic is being diverted south on Reckeweg Rd. The FACT is currently in route to the location to continue the investigation. We are asking the public to alter their morning commute to avoid the area for the next couple of hours.
At 0856 hours the FWPD sent an email update that westbound Illinois Road had been re-opened at 0850 hours.
At 1041 hours, the FWPD sent another update: The driver of the passenger vehicle has died at the hospital. Identity and cause of death will be released the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
