Fort Wayne Celebrates Daisies, South Bend Wins
By Derek DeckerFort Wayne, Indiana (June 3, 2023) – TinCaps left fielder Justin Farmer ripped a two-run double to cap a big fourth inning, but the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs affiliate) scored the last nine runs to win, 11-4, on a hot Saturday night at Parkview Field.
South Bend took the initial lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the TinCaps quickly responded. Fort Wayne scored four times in the bottom of the inning, started by an RBI groundout from designated hitter Carlos Luis. Then second baseman Lucas Dunn tied the game with a two-out RBI single before Farmer’s double gave the TinCaps the lead, 4-2.
The Cubs rattled off nine straight runs after that, including two in the fifth, one in the seventh, and a massive six-run eighth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of first baseman Liam Spence.
Before, during, and after the game, the TinCaps honored the Fort Wayne Daisies, a former member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, as part of an overall Celebration of Women in Sports Night. Three AAGPBL alumni were in attendance, along with the descendants of several former Daisies. In the afternoon at nearby Memorial Park, the TinCaps and Fort Wayne Parks unveiled new monuments dedicated to the Daisies, who played in Fort Wayne from 1945-54. Promotions throughout the game complemented the theme and the TinCaps wore Daisies replica jerseys that were auctioned off to benefit projects preserving the legacy of the Daisies.
Looking ahead, Sunday is Military Appreciation Day at Parkview Field, presented by OmniSource, Steel Dynamics, and the San Diego Padres.
