Improvement to Keep Millions of Gallons of Combined Sewage Out of River

Fort Wayne, Indiana (October 10, 2022) – Progress continues on a project to keep combined sewage out of the Maumee River as City Utilities continues stormwater and sewer upgrades on the city’s east side.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, the project’s second phase will move into the intersection of East Wayne Street and Anthony Boulevard, closing Anthony between Wayne and East Washington Boulevard.

A detour will use Maumee Avenue, Coliseum Boulevard, and Lake Avenue to head north and Lake, Coliseum and Washington in the reverse direction. Weather can impact the work schedule in both directions. Projections are that the closure will last around 70 days. Berry Street at Anthony will remain open during the construction.

Currently, nearly 31 million gallons of combined sewage each year flows into the river at an outfall near the Anthony bridge. When the project is complete, that combined sewage will go directly to the Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment keeping it out of the Maumee River.

When complete, the improvements will carry the flow to the Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. A later phase of the project will involve work on Anthony near Wayne.
