FWFD: House fire, Red Haw Drive

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched on a reported house fire called in by a neighbor in the 6900 block of Red Haw Drive at 10:54 am on July 20, 2021.

Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 20, 2021) – A young child that escaped the fire ran down to a nearby fire station, also alerting them of fire. Firefighters were told there was possibly a person trapped in the basement. Units arrived quickly, and seeing smoke from a small single-story residential structure, declared a working fire. FWFD Engine 13 crew found a female occupant with her head sticking out of a basement window and pulled her to safety. Two children had escaped on their own. However, three large dogs possibly inside.

Crews entered, searching the entire structure, and found two dogs in the basement, which were removed out the basement unharmed through a window. The other dog was found to have escaped without assistance. The Fort Wayne Police Department assisted in securing the dogs.

Firefighters rapidly extinguished a fire in the kitchen area. TRAA medics on the scene treated and transported the three occupants, two children, and the adult with minor injuries to the hospital.

Upon investigation, the fire was declared accidental, resulting from improperly disposed of hot material in a trash can in the kitchen.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was assisted by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Indiana Michigan Power, NIPSCO, the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, the City of Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control, and Neighborhood Code Enforcement.
