Troy Hershberger Promoted to Chief Deputy of the Allen County Sheriff’s Department
Fort Wayne, Indiana (March 15, 2021) – With the retirement of former Chief Deputy Jeffery (Charlie) Edwards, on March 6th 2021, Sheriff Gladieux has promoted Deputy Chief Troy Hershberger to the second in command position of Chief Deputy.
Chief Deputy Hershberger served as Deputy Chief with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department where he oversaw the Administrative Division since April of 2020. In this capacity, Chief Deputy Hershberger was in charge of the Warrants & Fugitive Division, Civil Division, Sex Offender Registry, Human Recourses, Bureau of Identification, Internal Affairs, Office of Public Information and Comptroller. From January of 2015 thru April of 2020 Chief Deputy Hershberger was in charge of the departments Operations Division where he supervised the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene, School Resource Officers, Community Resource Officers, Field Services and IT. Troy was the Lieutenant of Internal Affairs for 2 years and Commander of Criminal Investigations from July of 2006 to January of 2013. He has also held the position of Sergeant in the Patrol Division, Investigator/Detective, Patrol Officer and began his career in 1989 at the Allen County Confinement Facility.
During his 31-year career with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Chief Deputy Hershberger has served as a Polygraphist for 18 years, SWAT team member for 12 years, Bomb Squad Technician for 11 years and K-9 handler/officer for 6 years.
In the last 4 years, Chief Deputy Hershberger has worked to create 17 new positions while working closely with the school districts and administration. 10 of those positions were approved for School Resource Officers to help ensure the safety in our school systems. A new bike patrol was implemented in the summer of 2019 with 4 bike officers patrolling our trail system and county parks for the continued safety of the community. He has organized Allen County’s largest concert the Luke Bryan Farm Tour for 3 consecutive years, bringing in 20,000 citizens from several surrounding areas. This encompassed site location selection, security, logistics and traffic coordination with several agencies.
Chief Deputy Hershberger understands the importance of the community and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Alcohol Abuse Deterrent Program, Great Kids Make Great Communities Advisory Board, Dr. Bill Lewis Center for Children, the Advisory Board of the YMCA Youth Services Bureau and the Crime Stoppers Advisory Board. Formerly, he has severed on the YWCA of Northeast Indiana and the Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau where he was nominated for the Empowerment Award. Serving on The Mayor’s Commission on Domestic Violence, Rape and Sexual Harassment. Allen County’s Child Death Review Team, Child Protection Team of Allen County and Allen County School Safety Commission. Troy holds an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University and has been elected as an Allen County Republican Precinct Committee Member for the past 20 years.
