JANUARY 2021
...A SNOWSTORM TO END THE MONTH...

MUCH OF THE MONTH WAS MILD AND DRY. THERE WAS NOTABLE PRECIPITATION
TO START OF THE MONTH, FOLLOWED BY A SNOWSTORM IN THE FINAL DAYS.
UNTIL THAT SNOWSTORM, SNOW WAS ELUSIVE.

IT WAS NOT UNTIL JANUARY 23RD THAT FORT WAYNE RECORDED A DAILY
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE DEPARTURE BELOW NORMAL. OUR AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
THROUGH THE 22ND WAS 31.4 DEGREES, WHICH RANKS AS THE 21ST WARMEST
ON RECORD. I SHOULD NOTE THAT THIS SAME STRETCH OF DAYS IN 2020
RECORDED AN AVERAGE OF 32.5 DEGREES. THE OVERALL WARMTH THIS MONTH
IS A RESULT OF NOT ONLY MILD HIGH TEMPERATURES, BUT NOTABLE "WARM"
LOW TEMPERATURES AS WELL. THE CLIMATE NORMAL LOW TEMPERATURE FOR
JANUARY IS TYPICALLY 17.4 DEGREES. INSTEAD, FORT WAYNE OBSERVED 25.5
DEGREES THIS MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH WAS 30.0 DEGREES WHICH
IS 5.1 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 30TH WARMEST ON
RECORD.

A MOSTLY RAIN EVENT BEGAN THE MONTH WITH 0.67" OF PRECIPITATION.
SNOWFALL WAS ONLY RECORDED IN TINY DOSES. THROUGH JANUARY 29TH, THE
GREATEST SINGLE-DAY TOTAL WAS ONE-HALF INCH ON THE 3RD. FROM THE 1ST
THROUGH 29TH, ONLY 1.8" OF SNOW WAS REPORTED, WHICH TIES 2006 AS THE
18TH LEAST SNOWIEST DURING THAT TIME. HOWEVER, A POTENT STORM
DROPPED 8.6 INCHES OF SNOW FROM THE 30TH THROUGH 31ST. THIS IS THE
GREATEST 2-DAY TOTAL AT FORT WAYNE SINCE 9.6" WAS OBSERVED FROM
FEBRUARY 1-2, 2015. THE REPORTED 6.6 INCHES OF SNOW ON JANUARY 31ST
IS ALSO THE GREATEST SINGLE-DAY SNOW TOTAL SINCE 9.0 INCHES WAS
OBSERVED ON FEBRUARY 1, 2015.

SNOWFALL FOR THIS MONTH TOTALED 10.4 INCHES WHICH IS 0.3 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. IN JANUARY 2020, ONLY 2.6 INCHES WAS OBSERVED.
SNOWFALL FOR THE ENTIRE WINTER TOTALS 12.6 INCHES WHICH IS 6.0
INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

PRECIPITATION FOR THIS MONTH TOTALED 1.87 INCHES WHICH IS 0.39
INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE RANKS AS THE 55TH DRIEST JANUARY ON RECORD.

THERE WERE NO RECORDS SET THIS MONTH.
