TinCaps power past Bowling Green
Game Called in Seventh Due to Tornado Warning, Thunderstorm

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (June 23, 2016) – The TinCaps opened up the second half of their season with a 4-0 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. The game was called during the top of the seventh after a tornado warning and a thunderstorm encroached on southcentral Kentucky.

Right fielder Jhonatan Peña gave the TinCaps (1-0, 37-34) a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a two-out solo home run pulled to left field off Jose Mujica (L, 3-3). It was Peña’s second homer of the year, a booming blast that beat the actual thunder.

Then in the sixth, designated hitter Brad Zunica expanded the lead with his team-leading seventh long ball of the season, a three-run shot that went out the opposite way to left. With lightning dangerously dancing in the distance, it was a line drive that exited in a flash.

Under a threatening sky, left-hander Thomas Dorminy (W, 1-1) tossed six scoreless innings. The determined Dorminy proved daunting for the Hot Rods (0-1, 37-33) as he scattered five hits and a walk, while striking out two.

Based on the circumstances, Dorminy is credited with Fort Wayne’s first complete game since James Needy on Aug. 29, 2012, and first complete game shutout since Matt Wisler on July 1, 2012. (Wisler’s effort also came in a six-inning game shortened by weather.)

Bowling Green’s best chance to score came in the second. With Kevin Padlo at first base, David Olmedo-Barrera tripled to left-center field. Tyler Moore fielded the ball of the wall, threw to shortstop Ruddy Giron, who relayed it to the plate where catcher Austin Allen applied a tag on Padlo.

TinCaps left fielder Kodie Tidwell singled and drew two walks as he extended his on-base streak to 29 games — the longest active streak in Minor League Baseball.
