Game recap from the TinCaps:
De Los Santos Dazzles, But Fort Wayne Falls
Starter Holds Lansing to 1 Hit in 4-3 Walk-off Loss
LANSING, Mich. (May 24, 2016) – The Lansing Lugnuts walked off against the TinCaps, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and Lane Thomas at second base, Gunnar Heidt hit a slow-roller against Angel Mejia (L, 1-2) to the right side of the infield. Fort Wayne second baseman Kodie Tidwell fielded the ball on the grass, but his throw across his body went astray, allowing Thomas to score on what was scored as an infield single and an error.
The final score belies how well TinCaps starter Enyel De Los Santos pitched. The 20-year-old righty walked a batter and conceded an RBI single in the second inning. But those were the only two baserunners he allowed, as he retired the final 13 batters he faced. De Los Santos went a season-long six innings and struck out five.
Lansing (23-20) starter Angel Perdomo was just as impressive early on until Fort Wayne broke through in its second trip through the order. TinCaps center fielder Michael Gettys hit a one-out triple off the left-center field wall in the fourth. Third baseman Carlos Belen then brought him in on an RBI groundout to shortstop to tie the game, 1-1.
Fort Wayne (23-22) claimed a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth. Tidwell smacked a two-out RBI double, while Gettys followed with an RBI single. Gettys finished the night 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a season-long eight games.
The Lugnuts tied the game with two runs in home seventh.
Gustavo Pierre and Dan Lietz (W, 4-0) each tossed two scoreless innings of relief for Lansing.
The TinCaps now have suffered five walk-off losses this season, including two at Cooley Law School Stadium.
