Game recap from the TinCaps:

Great Start from Lockett Lost with No Runs
Righty Goes Seven Innings in 1-0 Loss

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (May 15, 2016) – Walker Lockett turned in the longest start of the season for a TinCaps pitcher, but came up on the short end in a 1-0 road loss against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark on Sunday.

With a wind chill in the 30s on an unseasonably cold mid-May afternoon, Lockett (L, 1-3) went a career-long seven innings on the mound. The 6-foot-5, 22-year-old right-hander blanked the Whitecaps for six frames. His only blemish came in the seventh as West Michigan right fielder Jose Azocar led off with an infield single. After a stolen base and a groundout moved him to third, 24-year-old shortstop Leo Laffita doubled to left field to score Azocar for the game’s only run.

Lockett didn’t walk a batter and struck out three as he held the Whitecaps to five hits. He needed only 77 pitches (55 strikes) to get through seven innings. Righty reliever Trey Wingenter pitched a perfect eighth in relief with his fastball topping off at 97 miles per hour.

West Michigan (18-16) starter Kyle Dowdy, making his first start of the season, kept Fort Wayne off the board for the first four innings. After Jon Maciel tossed two scoreless innings, Jake Shull (W, 1-0) stymied the TinCaps in the seventh and eighth. Gerson Moreno (S, 5) faced the minimum in the ninth.

Fort Wayne (19-18) out-hit the home team, 6-5. But the TinCaps went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.

After a day off on Monday, Fort Wayne returns to Parkview Field on Tuesday to open up a seven-game homestand.
