Game recap from the TinCaps:

Fort Wayne Falters in Series Opener
First time this season TinCaps lose by more than 2 runs

(April 21, 2016) – The TinCaps fell to the South Bend Cubs, 7-2, on Thursday night at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium.

Fort Wayne (9-6) had been 5-0 on the season when scoring first, but that changed on this mostly dry night. (The game was delayed 19 minutes at the start by rain.) TinCaps third baseman Ty France gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to plate shortstop Peter Van Gansen.

South Bend (8-6) responded with four unanswered runs — all with two outs. The Cubs tied it in the first, went in front, 2-1, in the second, and expanded their lead to 4-1 in the third on a two-run homer by designated hitter Eddy Julio Martinez.

The TinCaps pulled to within two, 4-2, in the seventh as catcher A.J. Kennedy scored on a wild pitch thrown by Cubs reliever John Williamson. After there were two outs and no one on base, Kennedy sparked a rally with a base hit and moved to third on a single by second baseman Daniel Bravo.

Fort Wayne put the tying runs on base against Williamson in the eighth. However, Greyfer Eregua (S, 2) entered to extinguish the threat. South Bend then put up three insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.

Cubs starter Ryan Kellogg (W, 2-1) held the TinCaps — who entered the night with the most runs in Minor League Baseball — in check for six innings. Enyel De Los Santos (L, 0-1) went the first four innings for Fort Wayne.

Nick Monroe followed him with three scoreless, no-hit innings.
