Game recap from the TinCaps:
TinCaps Crush Cubs, 10-2
Career Night for Luis Tejada
(April 15, 2016) – The TinCaps crushed the South Bend Cubs, 10-2, on Thursday night at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne is now 3-0 at home to begin the season, and 5-3 overall.
Despite allowing a run in the top of the first inning, the TinCaps wasted no time jumping in front for good. Center fielder Michael Gettys hit a one-out triple off the wall in left that proved to be the catalyst for a four-run frame. Third baseman Ty France plated Gettys with an RBI single to tie the game, while designated hitter
Luis Tejada provided a bases-clearing double to put Fort Wayne up, 4-1.
The TinCaps added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning, as France drove in two more with another single to make it 6-1. Catcher Austin Allen followed with a sacrifice fly. Tejada tacked one on with a run-scoring single, and it was 8-1 after two.
South Bend (4-3) got a run back in the top of the third, but Fort Wayne responded with one in the fifth and another in the seventh. Tejada finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs, as he doubled in a run in the fifth. Second baseman Peter Van Gansen (3-for-4) plated the seventh-inning score.
For Tejada, it was a career night. The 23-year-old from the Dominican Republic set a career high with his five RBIs and recorded four hits for the third time in 425 games. It was his first four-hit game since August 14, 2013.
Brett Kennedy (W, 1-0) became the first TinCaps starting pitcher to earn a win this season with five innings of two-run ball. The right-hander struck out five. Jerry Keel (three innings) and Taylor Cox (one inning) kept the Cubs off the board in relief. On the other side, left-hander Justin Steele (L, 0-1) lasted just two innings.
Fort Wayne, which leads the Midwest League in runs, went 8-for-19 with runners in scoring position and out-hit South Bend, 14-5. All nine TinCaps in the lineup reached base, with seven collecting at least one hit.Next Game
