News release from IPFW:

Elaine Blakemore to Receive 2016 Chancellor’s Medal

(April 13, 2016) – Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) has announced that Elaine Blakemore, professor of psychology, will be awarded the IPFW Chancellor’s Medal. The medal is awarded internally to individuals who have given exceptional service beyond the call of duty to IPFW. A special reception will be held this Thursday, April 14 from 5-7 p.m. in the Walb International Ballroom, 150 North.

Blakemore has been at IPFW since 1986. She received a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1978. She has an active research program studying children’s gender development, which has involved many IPFW students over the years. In 2009 she and two coauthors published a highly-regarded book, Gender Development. Blakemore teaches courses in developmental psychology and the psychology of women.

Blakemore has served the university tirelessly in a number of capacities, including serving as psychology chair for 14 years, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for nearly five years (August ’09-February ’14), and interim dean of the college for a year and a half (February ’14-June ’15). She served many years on the faculty senate, including as an at-large senator from Arts and Sciences, and as speaker of the Purdue faculty. In addition, Blakemore has chaired and served on numerous committees at all levels, including chairing task forces on online learning and on the use of student evaluations, and serving on the recent Task Force on promotion and tenure which led to new criteria and procedure documents for the campus. In Arts and Sciences she served several terms as Presiding Officer, and also chaired a task force on the role of women faculty in the college.

Her professional service includes serving the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) as secretary-treasurer and president. In 2012 Blakemore received a Presidential Citation from MPA for her service to the organization.

“I am very honored that IPFW is giving me this award,” said Blakemore. “This is a wonderful university, and I have loved all aspects of my work as a faculty member here—teaching, scholarship, and service. It’s not often that one is recognized for service, but it has been very important to me, and I am very appreciative of being recognized for it.”

The Chancellor’s Medal reception is open to IPFW faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
