News release from the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana:
Sponsors Needed to Honor Humanitarian
Red Cross honors Irene Walters as Humanitarian of the Year
(March 22, 2016) — On May 17, the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana will bestow one of its most prestigious awards upon a deserving citizen in our community. The Humanitarian of the Year award, presented annual by the Red Cross, recognizes an individual whose humanitarian contributions to our local community exemplify the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The award focuses on the foundation of these principles – Humanity. This year, Irene Walters will be honored.
In honor of Irene, the Red Cross will host a luncheon at the Mirro Center for Research and Innovation on the campus of Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, with a special reception for our Gold and Major sponsors beginning at 11:15 a.m.
Sponsorship of this event will help cover the cost of direct assistance provided to disaster clients including food, shelter, clothing and replacement of medications lost as a result of disaster. This revenue further helps facilitate the training of volunteers who respond to disasters and community preparedness education initiatives to attempt to reduce the incidence of emergencies. To learn more about available sponsorship packages, please contact Erin McDonald at 260-484-9336 extension 248 or erin.mcdonald@redcross.org.
Irene’s long history of engagement and commitment to our community makes her a truly deserving honoree. Here are just a few of her many significant contributions to our community:
- Co-founder of Francine’s Friends which provides mobile mammography screening to women who normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to receive this service.
- Driving force behind the IPFW Mastodons on Parade campaign. Auctioned off the replicas of the mastodons to benefit the United Way of Allen County.
- Played an instrumental role in the development and success of Women United, Kids Crossing Playground, and RiverFest.
Honor a true local humanitarian and help the Red Cross in Northeast Indiana continue to provide hope by sponsoring or attending this year’s Humanitarian of the Year luncheon. For more information, visit www.redcross.org.
