News release from Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation:
New Early Dementia Program at Community Center
(February 18, 2016) — The Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce a new program developed in cooperation with Lutheran Life Village of Birchwood and Lori Stock of the Fort Wayne Alzheimer Association. Unwind Your Mind: Activities for Persons with Early Dementia will feature a variety of activities and classes for individuals with signs of early dementia.
A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia is life changing. Individuals with dementia often feel isolated and disconnected and it is important that opportunities to participate in community activities that are meaningful, creative, and social are made available to them. Such activity can provide a sense of competence, a reduction in depression, and improved relationships with family members. Studies have shown that arts, crafts, computers and social activities help slow mild cognitive loss by up to 50%.
Some of the seminars, activities and classes that will be offered include: Dementia Conversations: Driving, Doctor Visits and Legal & Financial Planning for the Future, Hearing Screenings, Glass Fusing, Glass Mosaic, Clay Pottery-Hand Building, Acrylic Painting, Portable Seat Cushion Craft, Fusing Fun with Fabric Craft, Arthritis Foundation Exercise, Chair Yoga and Bingo. For a complete list of offerings, visit fortwayneparks.org and click on Programs/Adults/Community Center/Unwind Your Mind.
On March 21 at 10:30 am, the Community Center will host a Free Lunch and Social for the care giver and loved one who would like to learn more about the new Unwind Your Mind program. Reserve your free lunch by calling 260-427-6465 by March 16. Each family may receive up to two free lunches. Additional lunches may be purchased for $4 per person.
