Kevin Eubanks to headline Conference On Youth
(September 17, 2015) – Great KIDS make Great COMMUNITIES, a positive youth development initiative under the supervision of Allen Superior Court, Family Relations Division, is proud to present the 26th Annual Conference on Youth. This yearly training, funded in part by a grant from Foellinger Foundation, brings in nationally known experts in the field of youth and family services to train area workers on strengths-based practices. More than 800 youth and family serving professionals will attend this year’s conference. That audience includes social workers, law enforcement, DCS, CASA, educators, mental health professionals, youth program staff, and many others. The conference is designed to give local youth workers, those that might not otherwise have an opportunity to attend a national conference, a “national conference’ experience at a very affordable cost.
This year’s conference theme is “Nurturing the Whole Child: Mind, Body, and Spirit.” The conference speakers will address topics covering the well-being of the whole child, including: Trauma Informed Care, Parent Engagement, Music Therapy, Human Trafficking, Restorative Practices, Resilience, and Nurturing GRIT ( passion, perseverance, resilience, focus, and motivation).
This year’s conference will feature Kevin Eubanks, best known as the bandleader for “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Kevin is a passionate advocate for music education. He has served as the music director of the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Jazz in the Classroom program since 2010. Kevin will open the Conference on Youth with a solo performance and keynote address. He will then spend the afternoon at IPFW leading a masterclass for young musicians and rehearsing with the IPFW Jazz Ensemble. That evening, there is a special concert with Kevin Eubanks and the IPFW Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Farrell Vernon, at IPFW’s Auer Performance Hall. Conference attendees will receive a voucher for a free concert ticket.
At 10:45 am, Karen Mapp, EdD, will address the conference attendees on the topic of engaging parents in education. Dr. Mapp is a Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Faculty Director of the Education Policy and Management Master’s Program. Karen is the author of numerous publications including Having Their Say: Parents Describe How and Why They Are Engaged in Their Children’s Learning (2002) and co-author of Partners in Education: The Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships (2014).
Dr. David Walsh, one of the world’s leading authorities on children, teens, parenting, family life, and the impact of technology on children’s health and development, will give a keynote address at 2:30 pm. Dr. Walsh is the author of several books, including No: Why Kids of All Ages Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It and Smart Parenting, Smarter Kids.
