News release from the American Red Cross:
Hysterium and Haunted Hotel- 13th Floor to scare up blood donations for American Red Cross
Halloween Blood Drive Scheduled September 21 – 27
(September 16, 2015) — The Halloween Blood Drive sponsored by Hysterium and the Haunted Hotel – 13th Floor will take place Monday, September 21 through Sunday, September 27 at the American Red Cross Fort Wayne Donor Center, 1212 E. California Rd. and the Lutheran Donor Center, 7900 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite 107 in Fort Wayne.
“The American Red Cross provides helps for people in a variety of challenging situations,” said Brett Molitor, owner/operator of Hysterium and the Haunted Hotel – 13th Floor. “Our contribution of admission tickets is our way of thanking donors for literally giving their own blood to help the Red Cross meet the needs of patients.”
The Halloween Blood Drive continues a partnership between the Red Cross and the Haunted Hotel – 13th Floor that started six years ago. The Haunted Hotel-13th Floor, located at 511 North Jefferson Street in Huntington, began as a chapter project of the Huntington Jaycees. Hysterium, located at 4410 Arden Drive in Fort Wayne, is in its second year. It replaced the Haunted Cave which began 16 years ago.
The legend behind The Haunted Hotel is that the establishment is more than 100 years old and is inhabited by the ghosts of the 302 victims of hotel architect Damien Warwick. The ghosts roam the hallways and rooms of the hotel in search of new victims.
The story behind the Hysterium is that the building was abandoned as asylum when a mysterious virus demented the staff and residents. Current visitors must be careful to avoid contracting the Hysterium virus or risk becoming incarcerated themselves.
“I love it when groups of people leave the Haunted Hotel or the Hysterium and they’re laughing and breathing hard and looking back to see whether they’re being followed,” said Molitor. “It’s great to see their reactions and to hear their comments that they’ve had fun.”
“We look forward to this drive every year,” said Vince Robinson, external communications manager for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “Our partnership with Hysterium and Haunted Hotel offers a fun way to recognize our regular donors and a unique way to attract new donors.”
All presenting blood or platelet donors will receive a voucher for one general admission ticket to either Hysterium (Fort Wayne) or the Haunted Hotel – 13th Floor (Huntington) and a candy treat bag.
Strong donor turnout is needed to help replenish low blood supplies at the end of summer and boost supplies before the upcoming holiday season. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, A negative, B negative and AB blood.
To make an appointment to donate blood, eligible donors are encouraged to download the new Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a download link, visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
