(June 30, 2015) — Students in the MBA+ and Accerlerated MBA program at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) gave both of their respective “Excellence in Teaching” awards to Cigdem Gurgur, associate professor of management.

“Dr. Gurgur is an outstanding faculty member that sets high expectations that result in high achievements by her students,” said Michael Eikenberry, dean of the Doermer School of Business. “She has the industry experience that couples practical experience with theory, and is an asset of the Doermer School of Business that not only benefits her students but the business community of northeast Indiana.”

Gurgur joined Doermer School of Business in fall 2009. She is recognized as a business analytics scholar whose area of specialization is in decision problems involving uncertainty. Her research and teaching activities are in supply chain and revenue management, pricing analytics, the interface of operations, and finance and risk assessment, with expertise in both predictive and prescriptive modeling.

She earned a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from Rutgers University. She holds an M.S. in management science and operations research from Warwick Business School, England, and an M.S. in applied and mathematical statistics from Rutgers University.

Carol Sternberger, associate vice chancellor for faculty affairs and director of graduate programs, also had high praise. “Cigdem is an exceptionally strong teacher and IPFW is very fortunate to have her in the classroom. Indeed, she maintains high expectations and provides the scaffolding for the students to meet those expectations.”

Before joining IPFW, Gurgur taught in the Division of Economics and Business at Colorado School of Mines, where she was also the recipient of their Excellence in Teaching and Outstanding Faculty Awards. In her teaching at IPFW she emphasizes critical thinking, logic building, and managerial problem solving skills with rigorous business software applications.

Gurgur has served IPFW in various capacities, including associate of the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) Leadership Institute, chair of the Senate Educational Policy Committee, member of Honors Program Council, Senate University Resources Policy Committee, Senate Faculty Affairs Committee, Budgetary Affairs Subcommittee, 2014-2020 Strategic Plan Task Force, and the Chancellor’s Budget Committee for FY2015. She is Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society faculty; the society recognizes students of achievement in business and management.
