SCAN Duck Race Date Changed
Ducks to swim another day

(June 19, 2015) – SCAN officials report the change of date of the Weigand Construction Duck Race to Benefit SCAN from Saturday, June 20th to Saturday, July 25th. The race date has been changed due to safety concerns as a result of the water height, rapid flow of the St. Joseph River and flooding of Johnny Appleseed Park, which prevents core functions of the race from happening, such as the placement of the crane and installment of the finish line. SCAN’s Water Committee made the determination this morning after reviewing the conditions of the river and speaking with representatives from the City’s Flood Control Dept., who also strongly recommended that the race be rescheduled due to safety concerns.

The safety of our children is a core value of SCAN, and this carries through in all that we do—including ducks. Annually more than 150 families visit Johnny Appleseed Park to watch the race and to participate in free family activities. The Duck Race is more than about raising money, it’s also about creating a memorable positive experiences for children that will last a lifetime. Rescheduling the Race is the responsible action to take and will provide SCAN with the ability to hold a family-friendly race in July.

As the race is considered a gaming event and subject to the rules and regulations of the Indiana Gaming Commission, the race must be rescheduled no sooner than 30 days from June 19th. An amendment has been filed with the Indiana Gaming Commission to reschedule the race and children’s carnival games for Saturday, July 25th from 10 am to 11:30 am. This is the first year in the race’s 27 year history that the agency has changed the date of the Duck Race.

The numbered ducks will remain under lock and key until the 25th of July. Duck events will not be conducted in the community between now and the 25th; however, ducks will still be available for purchase at SCAN until Thursday, July 23rd.

Duck Deals are 1 for $5; 5 for $20; 13 for $50; 25 for $90; 50 for $160; and 100 for $300. As of this morning, 14,594 have been sold and ducks continue to come in! To date, more than $160,000 has been raised in duck certificate sales, donations and sponsorships made in support of this year’s Duck Race. Proceeds from the Duck Race support SCAN’s prevention and preservation programs. By supporting the Duck Race, you will help SCAN achieve its mission to protect children, prepare parents, strengthen families, and educate our community to stop child abuse and neglect.
