TinCaps top Kane County Cougars, take series
(June 13, 2015) – Franmil Reyes hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and lift the TinCaps to a 4-2 victory over the Kane County Cougars at Parkview Field. With the win, Fort Wayne took the three-game series. The TinCaps have won three consecutive series at home.
After a 2 hour, 6-minute rain delay at the start on Friday, both sides provided quick entertainment for fans in the first. Two batters into the game, Illdemaro Vargas hit a one-out triple for the Cougars. Vargas then scored on a sacrifice fly by Marty Herum.
The TinCaps copied Kane County’s formula in the home half. Shortstop Ruddy Giron hit a lead-off triple and came across to tie the game when the next batter, designated hitter Franchy Cordero, hit a sacrifice fly of his own.
Kane County (31-30) retook the lead in the second inning with another sac fly — this time from Victor Reyes to score Ryan Gebhardt.Fort Wayne (26-34) answered with an unearned run in the third to tie the game, 2-2. With two outs and the bases loaded, Reyes hit a groundball to third base that Henry Castillo fielded and threw to second base where it was dropped by the second baseman, Vargas. That allowed Giron to score.
In the seventh, Giron had a lead-off single and stole second base. Cordero sacrificed Giron to third on a bunt. Nick Torres drew an intentional walk and then stole second as well, setting the scene for Reyes’ big hit off left-hander Steve Hathaway (L, 0-2). This came after Reyes had three hits and drove in three runs on Thursday.
Yimmi Brasoban (W, 1-2) earned the win out of the bullpen. He threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out five after left-handed starter Thomas Dorminy went the first five. Lefty Brandon Fry (S, 1) recorded the final four outs. For Giron, who finished three-for-three with a walk, three runs scored, and a stolen base, Friday was his 12th multi-hit game since he joined the TinCaps on May 18.
Fort Wayne continues its homestand at Parkview Field on Saturday with the start of a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings (23-38), who enter on a 13-game losing streak. The TinCaps are set to start right-hander Ernesto Montas (4-4, 4.18), while the ‘Kings counter with righty Jeffeson Medina (2-6, 3.97).
