News release from the City of Fort Wayne:

Summer Cycling: Trek the Trails Rolls into Season Six

(May 4, 2015) – The City of Fort Wayne Greenways Department is once again sponsoring the popular community bike rides, Trek the Trails. On Tuesday May 5, 2015, the first ride of season six will kick-off at Rockhill Park.

Mayor Tom Henry started the rides as a way for residents to explore parts of the trail that they may not be familiar with and to create social opportunities for families and friends to venture in a guided tour. The free, guided bike rides have attracted nearly 8,000 riders, since it started in 2010 — with 1,647 participating last year.

This year there are 23 Tuesday rides that average 8 miles and four Saturday rides that increase each month from 14-18 miles in length. The Saturday rides are once a month beginning in June and are designed for more experienced riders. See attached schedule

Trek the Trails will take bicyclists through all parts of the community – along the Rivergreenway, the Wabash & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, the Aboite Trails, and to New Haven’s Moser Park. Adults should accompany children and all riders are encouraged to wear helmets.

The event is co-sponsored by Fort Wayne Trails, Inc. a dynamic, not-for-profit [501 (c) (3)] corporation dedicated to enhancing our vibrant and healthy community through the development of an ever-expanding multi-use trail network.

Ride sponsors for the entire season include, Summit City Bicycles & Fitness, Faegre Baker Daniels.

About the Greenways Department
In 2005, the City of Fort Wayne Greenways Department was moved out of the Parks Department and into the city’s Transportation Department, in the Division of Public Works. It was clear that trails and greenways were no longer just for recreation. The push toward active transportation was important to growing the City’s trail network.

Since becoming part of the Transportation Department, the City’s trails experienced tremendous growth. The City maintains 74 percent of the 85 miles of trails in Allen County.

This year, the City of Fort Wayne is constructing an additional 4.6 miles of the trail network and, with additions in the County; the network will grow to more than 90 miles.
