USF Commencement Speakers Represent Past and Present
Dr. Richard Avdul and 2015 USF graduate Carolina Flores will speak at the University of Saint Francis commencement ceremony on May 2.
(April 28, 2015) — As part of its 125th anniversary celebration, the University of Saint Francis is honoring the university’s past and present by presenting two speakers at its 2015 commencement ceremony on May 2 at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum. They are University of Saint Francis Professor Emeritus and former education department chair Dr. Richard Avdul, representing the history of the university, and 2015 graduate and Student Government Association president Carolina Flores, representing current USF students.
Dr. Avdul has spent over 50 years in education, working with institutions of higher learning across the country and educators around the world. Avdul worked in the University of Saint Francis education department for 45 years, preparing students to become teachers. He has also worked closely with educators from Albania to assist them in transforming their educational system to more closely mirror that of a democratic society.
Dr. Avdul currently serves as Director of Field Placements, helping to guide students who are preparing to enter the classroom as educators. His work is giving future teachers the real-world experience they need as they transition from coursework to tangible application in the classroom.
Flores serves as president of USF’s Student Government Association and has also has been active in several community organizations including Habitat for Humanity, St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen and Community Harvest Food Bank. She is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Legal Studies and plans to continue working in the LaPorte County Circuit Court where she has been an intern to Judge Thomas Alevizos since 2012. After completing law school, Flores hopes to practice corporate law or work for a crisis management firm.
